Worry less. Plan more.
Do you want a secure retirement, free from worry, stress, and confusion? The Bucket Plan is a must-read book for anyone serious about creating a practical and sensible financial plan for his or her retirement years. The financial planning process outlined in this book — newly updated in 2023 — is based on a three-bucket philosophy of strategically positioning assets to plan for and mitigate the risks and dangers that can occur in retirement.
Readers will learn:
• The three biggest dangers for your financial future and how The Bucket Plan® helps protect from them
• A formula for calculating whether you will have an income deficit and, if so, how much money is needed to prevent it
• A surefire way to avoid taking on too much investment risk on money you may need in the near future
• Much, much more
When readers strategically allocate their money using Jason L Smith's three-bucket philosophy, they can create a plan that mitigates risk and offers an opportunity for growth into the future, allowing them to feel more secure about retirement.

About the author

Jason L Smith is a nationally-acclaimed speaker, financial planner, author, coach, and entrepreneur. Following in his father’s footsteps as a second-generation advisor, he founded his financial services practice, The JL Smith Group, in 1995 to provide clients with holistic financial planning services that align investments, insurance, taxes, and estate planning into one comprehensive, coordinated plan. After a serious heart diagnosis at the age of twenty-nine, Jason made a commitment to transition his personal financial planning firm into a process-driven company so it could continue with or without him. Today, his financial planning practice is self-managing, allowing him to provide focused financial planning services to his clients.
With the overriding goal of improving the lives of American families through holistic financial planning, Jason utilizes his experiences as an accomplished advisor to train and mentor other advisors through live training events, monthly coaching calls and study groups. To better fulfill this mission, he founded Clarity 2 Prosperity, a financial training, coaching and IP development organization for financial advisors, where he currently serves as president and CEO. He also founded and serves as the chairman for Prosperity Capital Advisors, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm and C2P Advisory Group, an insurance marketing organization. Together, the three firms work to help advisors and institutions nationwide to simplify holistic financial planning in order to provide financial solutions in the best interest of their clients.
Jason regularly speaks at exclusive industry events including Ed Slott’s Elite IRA Advisor Group® workshops, Forum 400, and MDRT’s Top of the Table annual meeting. He was recognized as an Emerging Leader and Legend at Forum 400, a member only insurance industry organization; he was named as one of Investment News Top 40 Under 40 Industry Standouts and honored with his picture on the cover of the publication; and he received an honorable mention for Best Rising Star by National Underwriter Life & Health magazine. He consistently serves as a national media resource and has authored several advisor-facing books, including Clarity 2 Prosperity: An Advisor’s Guide to Charging Fees for Holistic Planning and is co-author of The Hiring Advantage. Jason has been featured on public television for his leadership in moving the industry toward providing fully holistic services for the benefit of all clients.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Great, easy read book on how to invest in different "Buckets" for retirement to assure you have the income you need to retire on in the "Near" bucket, yet grow the money for your "Future" bucket.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2023Hi. A quick read. The book lays out the rationale for a bucket strategy but fails to provide specific funds or ETFs to use to accomplish it. I was hoping for specifics. The rationale is pretty much available for free but this book may be helpful if you want some info related to organizing your assets, retirement spending psychology and risk mitigation theory.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2018As a financial advisor, I have done the bucket plan with my clients. What I haven't done is communicated it as clear as this book. I am now handing this book out to my clients when we do their financial plan.
It is written in simple, easy to understand language. As a narrative, you can follow the story of a couple going through the planning process. It explains why this process works and how it can reduce your exposure to market volatility.
This book is great for both do-it-yourselfers or people who work with advisors.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2022This is an easy read, and I am a proponent of the 3 bucket system for retirement savings. The book’s glaring weakness is its lack of specific recommendations for investment products to fill each bucket. The author glosses over this by stating — rightly — that every investor’s situation is different. While true, this could be said about every other issue addressed in the book. Certainly a few real life portfolios could have been presented as example. My suspicion is that the author left out this critical piece in order to drive readers to seek out an appointment with one of his accredited planners. Which is all well and good. But for those comfortable handling investing on their own, it’s a major omission, and this book will leave you unsatisfied.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2018This is an easy read with excellent information. Everyone can benefit from learning more about finances in retirement and this is a good starting point.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2017A short and simple explanation of retirement planning. This book helps people understand the steps necessary and things to watch out for when planning for retirement. Not only have I used this book in my own planning, but have given a copy to my parents to help them organize their own retirement. I cannot recommend this book enough.
