Reference 2017

Reference – issue date: September 11; reservations due: August 30

Print, digital, online—reference publishers, and reference buyers, particularly librarians—face a “balancing act,” as Andrew Richard Albanese wrote about the category

He continued, “[R]eference work for libraries today is a difficult balancing act involving budgets, a mix of new and old formats, and ever-shifting needs and expectations.”

Reference spans standalone trivia books to almanacs to atlases to travel guides to dictionaries and beyond. Even wedding planners, a relatively newcomer to the reference category.

Many librarians told Albanese that they are accessing databases and online resources even as print versions of the same reference titles sit nearby on the shelves.
